Diamond Care Guide

How to Care for Your Diamonds

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on the Moh Scale of Mineral Hardness (they are a 10 on the 1 to 10 scale). Their hardness, durability, and heat-resistance are some of the reasons why diamonds are valuable and versatile items in jewelry production. With that being said, diamonds are still susceptible to cracking, dulling and breaking, and require proper care. Keeping your diamond clean will enhance its luster and light-return properties. In order to keep your diamond shining like new, it’s important to protect it and clean it periodically.

Protect Your Diamond

We recommend that you remove the ring when engaging in activities that involve potential impact to the diamond and the ring. Playing sports, lifting weights, and gardening are all examples of activities that have been known to cause damage to the diamonds in the ring. Swimming in chlorinated water will cause white and yellow gold to react with the chlorine in the water to form gold-chloride. This will cause the ring to become brittle in time. When you remove the ring, it is wise to place it in a soft container that would prevent the ring from being damaged while enabling you to remember where it was placed.

At The Diamond Vault we strongly recommend and urge our clients to bring the ring in once every six months to have its prongs and gems inspected. Our warranty is comprehensive and covers nearly all forms of wear and damage to the ring. While we inspect the ring or jewelry item, we will also have it professionally cleaned. This process generally only takes a few minutes.

Certain methods of setting such as bezel settings are inherently sturdy and provide the diamond with a greater measure of protection. Rings that are created using very small diamonds with very small prongs are more susceptible to wear and the loss of diamonds. We invite you to Contact Us if you have any questions or concerns about the various diamond settings available at The Diamond Vault.

Clean Your Diamond Jewelry

Your best bet is to have your jewelry professionally cleaned here at The Diamond Vault. Our professional-grade ultrasonic bath and steam-cleaner will leave your ring looking as good as new. We urge your to have your jewelry inspected at least twice a year to make sure that the diamonds and the metal are in good shape. Our free professional cleaning will also enable us to inspect the ring for any issues.

At home you can soak the ring or jewelry item into a bowl containing a bit of dish-soap and warm water. Allow the ring to soak for several hours or overnight and then use a soft-bristled tooth brush to remove any stubborn films and contaminants from the ring. After this cleaning simply rinse off the ring to remove any film from the soap. This at-home cleaning will enable you to maintain the ring’s cleanliness between professional cleanings at The Diamond Vault.

Diamond Insurance

A very important way to protect your diamond jewelry against damage, theft or loss is to insure it. The Diamond Vault provides you with a retail replacement value appraisal for items that are purchased from us. This appraisal can be submitted to your home owner’s or renter’s insurance company that can then add the jewelry item to your existing policy. If you do not have an existing insurer or if you are looking for alternative options, The Diamond Vault can help you acquire “The Perfect Circle” jewelry insurance through industry leader Jewelers Mutual.
